Four researchers—Stina Krings, Franz Weinland, Tillmann Westphal, and Till Ider—from the University of Applied Sciences Lübeck (THL) visited the Nature Research Centre (NRC) from September 3 to 5, 2024. This visit provided a valuable opportunity for exchanging knowledge and experiences with the Laboratory of Algology and Microbial Ecology, especially regarding similar projects undertaken by the research groups ‘AlgaeService for LIFE’ (NRC) and ‘Biorem Project’ (THL). Both projects focus on harvesting cyanobacterial blooms and developing valuable products from their biomass.
The ‘Biorem Project,’ officially titled Bioremediation through the Collection of Microalgae in Local Freshwater Bodies in Northern Germany (2023.07–2024.12), is led by Prof. Dr. Norbert Reintjes. It aims to develop an effective harvesting system and value chain for microalgae and cyanobacteria, with a focus on climate protection aspects such as GHG emissions modelling and detection. The project also explores potential application scenarios for scaling the method.
During the visit, joint discussions between the NRC and THL teams took place, followed by a harvesting session at the Kaunas reservoir using the AS-LAND prototype. A total of 70 kg of wet cyanobacteria biomass was collected, which will be utilized for further experimental work.
The biomass of Cladophora macroalgae was collected in the summer of 2024 in the Kaunas reservoir near the Pažaislis bathing area and in the river Nevėžis. A total of 1.5 tons of macroalgae biomass was collected and dried to be used for the production of valuable bioproducts.
The Nature Research Center and UAB Baltic UAV Services have patented the AS-LAND prototype for the collection of cyanobacteria biomass (Patent No. 7081, 12.08.2024).
The Nature Research Center received funding from the Lithuanian Science Council for the project “Biopesticides for agriculture: harmful blooms forming species against plant pathogens” (P-MIP-24-699).
